I tried to opened an already existing AJAX enabled website project in VWD2008 and a pop up prompted me to whether or not the project needs to be converted to the new Framework. Further, it also said that the Framework version can be set back to the older version (2.0 in my case) if needed.

And then there is a checkbox that is checked by default that states "Do the same for all apps in this directory" (something along those lines). As a best practice, I never accept options such as these. And so, I unchecked this box but allowed my little 2.0 project to be converted to 3.5. I'm glad I unchecked that box because when the website opened up, it had wiped out my web.config file and replaced it with only the major config tags. Everything else inside these tags was gone!!!

Luckily, I restored it from my source control.

You may want to try this out to see if it is happening on your end as well. Exercise caution when opening existing 2.0 projects and make sure you have a backup.

Cheers,

-panand
